Developing Davis Islands Future

A frequent topic of discussion around the Islands is the future projects and initatives planned for our community. In short these projects are consistent with the June 6, 2007 approved Davis Islands Community Plan which is guided by the DI Stewardship Team. This year the Stewadship Team is presenting projects for discussion and review by the Davis Islands Civic Association. The following are a list of four proposed items identified for discussion.

  • Installation of restrooms at Seaplane Basin Park – Capital Project
  • Undergrounding of Utility Lines on the Islands – Multi-year project
  • Study to review feasibility of Davis Islands Community Center
  • Review of regulations regarding “Live-Aboards” on Seaplane Basin

These items are scheduled for review and discussion at the April 4, 2017 meeting of the Davis Islands Civic Association, residents are always welcome to attend.

Additionally, the DI Stewardship Team meets once each quarter, with their next meeting scheduled for May 16, 2017 at the DI Campus of HCC, 1st floor conference room.

 

More Beef on the New Restaurant

Last month we made a brief mention of a new restaurant coming to the DI Village “Islands Cantina”. This month we were able to speak with John Harr the owner of Islands Pizza and Islands Club, to discuss with us additional details on his most recent Islands venture. Islands Cantina will be a fresh ingredient Tex Mex restaurant on the higher-end (think Bar Taco in Hyde Park) with custom Tacos, Bowls and handcrafted margaritas & cocktails. Additionally, to give the food a special Islands flare each of the various Tacos will be named after Davis Islands streets. The restaurant is currently scheduled to open in April.

PS: If you are really interested in getting a first hand “TASTE” of the new cuisine, then stop by Islands Club any Friday from now until the resturant opens. Each week John and his team will be offering a different item from the future menu for customers to order and give their feedback.

The UF/IFAS Extensions Hillsborough County is holding its “Compost Happens, Microirrigation and Rainwater Harvesting Workshop”

Gasparilla 2017

With the new year upon us, now starts the Gasparilla season.  Below are the dates of the various Gasparilla events for January as well as the “No Parking” map for  Davis Islands.

Tampa Christmas Tree Collection

The City of Tampa Solid Waster department will continue Christmas tree collection until January 6th.  Residents are asked to remove all decorations and lights, cut tree limbs to four feet lengths, bundle, and place curbside on their regularly scheduled yard waste collection day.

It’s Always Good to Know

Recently there have been questions regarding sidewalk access around the Islands. In particular, times where vehicles are parked across the sidewalk or large tree branches from an owner’s property are projecting over the sidewalk. Doing some research through the City of Tampa’s Neighborhood Enhancement Division, the following City Ordinances as it relates to these two items are explained (click links below):

Sec. 22-8. – Obstructing streets, sidewalks, alleys, etc.; exceptions.

Sec. 22-309. – Trimming branches of trees projecting over streets and sidewalks.

While it is always great to be informed, it is just as important to work with each other when an issue arises. We live in a neighborhood so being neighborly is kinda what it is all about 🙂

Bayshore Little League Spring Registration Open

It’s that time of the year again. Registration for Bayshore Little League Spring season has begun. This is a great opportunity for Boys and Girls to participate in our National pastime. Annual Golf Cart Parade

If you have a low speed vehicle then come out and join the rest of your fellow residents at this great annual activity.  Save the date for Sunday December 18th at 5pm.  Meet at the Riviera bridge (intersection of Lucerne and Riviera)  Dress your cart up as much as you want, some years it gets pretty extravagant!
