January can also mean trying something different, establishing a new tradition or setting goals. I have outlined a few fun things to do right here on Davis Islands to get the most out of our community.

How to Experience Islands Living in 2018!

As Islands residents we can sometimes forget about all the great amenities we have at our fingertips.  In fact I would venture to say that we have more amenities than any other neighborhood in the City of Tampa.  To this end, I compiled a list of things you can do this year:

  • Take a Walk or jog on the 1.3 mile Davis Islands trail.
  • Take a Dip in the Roy Jenkins Community Pool that is now heated and open year round.
  • Play a Game, set or match at the Sandra Freedman Tennis Complex’s clay courts.
  • Take Fido for a swim or run at the Davis Islands Dog Parks.
  • Launch your Boat or kayak at the Davis Islands Public Boat Ramp.
  • Picnic and Play at Seaplane Basin or the Thumbprint on the South Part of the Islands
  • The Plane the Plane watch the plains take off and land from Peter O Knight air port.
  • Ride the “Tour de Islands” i.e. join one of the many road bike groups that cycle week.
  • Rent a Bike from “Coast” bike share and ride from the Islands to Downtown.
  • Take the Pirate Taxi Boat from Channel Dr. (near the ball fields)
  • Take in a Little League baseball or softball game at the Bayshore Little League fields on Columbia Dr.
  • Find a Special spot around the Islands to take in a little fishing.

Gasparilla 2018

The new year means Gasparilla!  Below are the dates of the various Gasparilla events for January as well as the “No Parking” map for
Davis Islands.
Gasparilla Children’s Parade: Jan. 20th – 3:30pm to 6pm
Gasparilla Invasion: Jan. 27th – 11:30am to 1pm
Gasparilla Pirate Fest Parade: Jan. 27th – 2:00pm to approx 5:30pm

Book of the Month

Book of the Month
This past month I had the chance to read a great autobiography from the legendary college basketball coach John Wooden “Wooden on Leadership”
Wooden holds the record for most NCAA basketball championships at 10 in 12 years.  That being said after reading this book it seems the most important thing to Wooden was the development of leaders both on and off the court rather than the championships.
Over his coaching tenure, he developed a pyramid of success that he utilized with all his teams. This pyramid can also be used in business and personal life.
Great book about a solid individual.  I am always seeking new books to read so if you have a favorite let me know!

Angel Giving Tree for Animals

Wag Natural Pet Market’s annual “Angel Giving Tree” is accepting your pet food, blankets and leash/collar donations to benefit the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. Drop by the store anytime before December 14th with your donations.

Golf Carts Approved

As you have probably heard Davis Islands is now a golf cart approved community. We are the testing ground for other neighborhoods in the City and want to set a great example! Click to review the ordinance and understand the requirements DI Golf Cart Ordinance.

17th Annual Davis Islands Toy Drive

Join your neighbors on December 11th for the 16th Annual Davis Islands Toy Drive. This yearly event is a great way to give to children that need something special this holiday season, as well as an opportunity to meet your neighbors. For more information on the Santa Stop closest to you visit DI Toy Drive on facebook.

DI Golf Cart Parade

Now that golf carts have been approved for Davis Islands streets you can join your fellow residents in this great annual activity. Save the date for Sunday December 17th. Details to follow but if similar to last year it will start at 5pm at the Riviera bridge (intersection of Lucerne and Riviera) Dress your cart up as much as you want, some years it gets pretty extravagant! Book of the Month

This past month a special book came across my desk, while it is a short read it is inspiring. “Make Your Bed Little Things That Can Change Your Life..and Maybe the World” written by Admiral William H McRaven (Retired). Admiral McRaven combines his personal experiences as a Navy Seal and US Naval Commander with pragmatic thoughts on how to improve yourself with just small changes. In fact this book was inspired by a commencement address he gave at the University of Texas in 2014. Click to see this commencement address. I think this is a great book, in particular for our kids to read as they are going into high-school. I am always seeking new books to read so if you have a favorite let me know!

S.W.E.E.P. – Davis Islands

The Annual City of Tampa Solid Waste Enhanced Environmental Program (S.W.E.E.P) which was delayed from the Hurricane is back on schedule. Davis Islands collection is scheduled for December 18th. For collection details visit the City’s S.W.E.E.P. website page here.

DI Civic Association Annual Meeting

All Davis Islands residents are invited to attend the Davis Islands Civic Association’s Annual Meeting on November 14th starting at 6:30pm (DI Garden Club). As in years past this is an opportunity to learn about next year’s activities, events and initiatives. Also it is a great chance to socialize with fellow neighbors.

Fantastic Halloween in the Village Turnout 2017!

This years Halloween in the Village was a huge success, with more families and dogs than ever before.
First, a big shout out to Jenn Fadal of Wag Natural Pet Market for creating and organizing this event each year.  This was the 8th Annual event and the number of participants continue to increase.
Second, a special thank you to PROforma or all of the fantastic goody bags with so much swag.  Five-hundred goody bags were passed out with tons of toys and treats for the kids. And thank you to Fountain Mediterranean who graciously welcomes all kids, parents and dogs to take over their stage and patio that day.

Book of the Month

As a young child and teenager I did not like to read and would avoid at all costs.  That has changed as I became an adult and now have a child of my own.  Each month I work to read 2 to 3 books and I thought it would be fun to pass what is on my bookself or in most cases my iPad.  This past month’s book is “Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable” written by Tim Grover.  Tim is the training and conditioning coach for basketball greats like Michael Jordan, Dwayne Wade and Kobe Bryant.  This book really captures the essence of what is necessary to truly be at an elite level in anything you do and in particular the mental attitude.  It is a quick read and many of his example with his professional athletes are entertaining.
I am always seeking new books to read so if you have a favorite let me know!
