THE DAVIS ISLANDS NEWSLETTER

Welcome to the April Islands View newsletter. This month we have a new business opening in the village and a couple of fun events to participate in with the start of Spring. Also, I encourage you to take a quick look at the real estate summary for March, we saw quite a bit of activity to start the selling season.

The former location of Islands Cantina has a new tenant.  FitMethod 413 is a Group Fitness training company that focuses on the mind, body and spirit.  Their website is fitmethod413.com

Thursday Night Sail

Are you looking for an opportunity to both learn and have fun on the water?  Well the Davis Islands Yacht Club conducts their Thursday Night Race series every Thursday starting at 5pm at the southern most point of the Islands. This is a free event and you DO NOT need to be a member of the Yacht Club but rather just an interest in learning how to sail.

Book of the Month

In March my latest book came back into the category of pursuing your purpose.  The author and athlete Tim Tebow’s book “This is the Day: Reclaim Your Dream. Ignite Your Passion. Live your Purpose.”
I had never read a book by Tim Tebow before but for some reason I was curious.  It is a solid read that not only gave examples from his life and pursuit of his dreams but more importantly provided the boost we all need at times to get moving in our purpose.  He mixes both his spiritual thoughts along with the examples from his life that required a reassessment of his purpose in ultimate pursuit of his dreams, both baseball and beyond.


DI Civic Association Monthly Meeting

The next meeting of the DI Civic Association will be held Tuesday April 2nd at the Sandra Freedman Tennis Complex, starting at 7pm.

REAL ESTATE MARKET UPDATED MARCH 2019

This month the real estate market on Davis Islands increased at a very strong clip with both listings going under contract and new homes coming to market in the double digits. In particular there were 11 new homes coming to market while 14 existing homes went under contract.  There were 9 homes closed with just 29 available for sale.


The lowest priced home currently for sale came in at $415,000

The highest priced home currently for sale came in at $3,999,000


The lowest priced home that sold closed at $465,000

The highest priced home sold at $4,345,000


The Original List Price to Sales Price Ratio is 96.7% 2019 vs 100% in 2018


The Average Days on Market for active properties is 47

In summary: Homes going under contract continued the strong pace from last month.  New homes coming to market did increase substantial and inventory numbers continue to stay low.

School is out and the summer has begun.  Check out a few of the activities available on the Islands and remember that if you are taking an extended vacation away from home, follow a few simple safety precautions we listed below.

New Cafe Coming Soon to DI!
According to the sign a new cafe will be opening where the former Ziggy’s Cafe had taken residence.  We are still seeking details but it is good to know this space will not be vacant for long.

 

Preparing Your Home for Vacation
During the summer months we are all excited about taking some time off, and in many cases leaving for an extended period.  Take a few precautions so your home stays exactly how you left it when you return.
SECURITY STEPS:
  • Stop your mail and newspaper or ask a neighbor to collect for you
  • Park your car inside your garage
  • Ask a neighbor to park in your driveway occasionally
  • Keep at least one inside light on a timer
  • Install motion-activated flood lights outside
  • Keep lawn trim
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
  • Unplug small appliances and electronic devices (saves energy)
  • Put water heater in “vacation” mode or turn off
  • Turn off water valves to dishwasher, washing machine and sinks
  • Set thermostat higher than usually to save energy
  • Make sure smoke detectors work
  • Notify home security company you will be away
  • Leave emergency contact number with a neighbor

Youth Sailing Summer Camp

Are you still trying to figure out great activities for your son or daughter to participate in this summer?  Why not register them for a week of Youth Sailing at the Davis Islands Yacht Club.  For the past two years my son Sebastian has participated in this program and it was great, so much so that we registered for him to do it again.  It was an excellent opportunity for him to learn the basics and just get more comfortable on the water.  You can register and find out more at DIYC Youth Sailing.  FYI, you do NOT need to be a member of DIYC to participate.

 June Events

Summer Solstice Swim

Join your neighbors and the Davis Islands Civic Association at their Swim Under the Stars event June 21st (Thursday).  Event starts at 6pm-8pm at the Roy Jenkins Pool.  There will be a Pot Luck dinner from 8-9pm, with the Civic Association providing Burgers and Hot Dogs.  Bring a dish to share.  RSVP to Events@dicivic.org.
 

July 4th Decorated Bike and Golf Cart Parade

Get in the Independence Day spirit and join Islands residence as they host the first Annual 4th of July Decorated Bike and Golf Cart Parade.  You must RSVP for this event by June 30th to events@dicivic.org with the following information.  Name, whether bike or golf cart and how many people in your group.

 

Book of the Month

This month I decided to switch gears and read a biography.  While everyone knows Abraham Lincoln and his part in American history, this book really dives into the details of his life from the very beginning and what shaped him into the great President we all know today.
From his time growing up in the midwest, to his initial experience as an Illinois legislature, this book dives into interesting details that we don’t readily hear about in history books.
If you are a history buff or just enjoy learning more about figures that have shaped our country, this is a good book to pick up.
