Make Your Mark Monthly: Patience

When you think of Spring Break, images of sandy beaches, powdery snow or even days on your sofa might run through your mind.  For my family this year was different.

A friend’s Facebook post and our son’s interest in a “wild adventure” led us to become tourists in our home state of Florida.  The destination? Florida Caverns State Park.

Did you know there were caves in Florida? Neither did we. But one rainy afternoon, we embarked on a journey, taking us below the surface, down into Florida’s only air filled cavern. Best of all was the intriguing beauty of the stalagmites, stalactites and other limestone formations.

Most impressive was this one fact. Stalactites and stalagmites grow at an unbelievable rate of 10cm every 1,000 years. Think about it this way: a12-inch ruler is 30 centimeters long. So, to grow a ruler’s length, we are talking 3,000 years!

My wife and I were just as amazed as our six year old to learn this fact and discussed it on the way home. We related it to personal growth and how we are always so needy for immediate gratification. Lose weight? It should only take a few weeks.  Get that work promotion? It should occur on day one. Reaching that financial goal? The money should come pouring in this week.

But really, growth can happen at a snail’s pace- unapparent to the naked eye. The stalactites form from a consistent drop of mineral filled precipitation dripping from the limestone cave ceiling. This slow and steady movement of water builds upon itself over and over again, creating beautiful, unique and strong formations that last thousands of years. (Some date back 190,000 years).

So how about us? How about our own development? To achieve success and growth in our own lives, shouldn’t we expect the same? True and lasting growth occurs through the steady building of experiences, knowledge, successes and failures.  The quick and easy might give short term results, but they are fleeting, rather for lasting growth a foundation must be built and then continuingly built upon.

Another interesting fact is that these limestone formations are sensitive to human touch; the oil from our fingers actually stunts the growth by preventing the mineral precipitation from attaching to the previous layer.  How much similar is that to our growth when we allow outside influences, short cuts or negative thoughts into our minds, which then stunt our personal development.

After our journey to North Florida, it became more apparent that we are a continual work in progress.  Each step we take towards developing ourselves should be taken with the same consistency, persistence and PATIENCE as these limestone formations. While we may not always realize the changes occurring immediately, they do build upon themselves, until finally one day we experience and see the beauty that has been created.

This month I encourage you to continue your journey forward in what is important to you and to have the patience and persistence to see it through.

Have a great month!

Greetings and welcome to the April issue
of the Islands View newsletter.

This month there are a few fun events to participate in on the Islands. The First Responders Day at the DI Fire Station is always a special treat for the kids, the resident’s social this month is in a beautiful location and there is a great opportunity to clean up our Islands.

As Spring gets into full bloom, I encourage you to get out and meet your neighbors and fellow Islanders. We are a great community with a ton of amenities; at the same time, it is really the people that make our home so special.

Have a great month and I hope to see you around the Islands!

Book of the Month

As you probably can guess by now I enjoy reading books that improve myself professionally, personally and spiritually.  Included in this list are autobiographies of people that have reached the pinnacle of success in whatever they desire to accomplish.  This month I focused on “Richard Branson Losing My Virginity”. While the title of this book might raise an eyebrow, the content is anything but.  The stories that Branson shares regarding his personal and professional challenges/successes are both entertaining and motivating.  From his hot air ballon flights around the world, to the creation of the Virgin Company.  His first hand accounts give you real insight into the personality, mind and determination of a successful entrepreneur who did it his way.

ISLANDS NEWS

Give your yard a Little “Aqua-Love” this Spring
Spring is almost here! Do you have plans to re-landscape? If so,  will you be Florida-Friendly?
Believe it or not, the number one use of our municipal water supplies is the irrigation of lawns and landscaping.
Why is this problematic? The over use of municipal H2O directly affects the aquifer, which is the source of our drinking water.  The aquifer also supports our natural springs and a variety of eco systems. Not to mention, the fertilizers and pesticides we use to make our lawns look great, negatively impacts our lakes, bays and rivers.
How can we be better?
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences developed the Florida Friendly Landscaping Program, which promotes 9 principles to preserve and protect our natural water resources.

Here they are from the FloridaYards.org website:

1.     Right Plant, Right Place- Choose plants that can survive our Florida heat with minimum need for water, pesticide or fertilizer.
2.     Water Efficiently- Only water when your lawn really needs it.
3.     Fertilize Appropriately- Less is best.
4.     Mulch- Two-Three inches of mulch will help retain moisture and reduce weeds.
5.     Attract Wildlife- Think butterfly plants.
6.     Manage Yard Pests Responsibly- Choose pesticides wisely and the more natural the better.
7.     Recycle- Composted grass clippings and yard trimmings provide nutrients to the soil and reduce waste.
8.     Reduce Stormwater Runoff- Doing so will reduce pollutants into our bay.
9.     Protect the Waterfront- Waterfront property is fragile. Protecting it will help to maintain freshwater and marine ecosystems.

There are terrific recources out there to help all of us be more Florida- Friendly this year. And, I personally can’t wait to see Davis Islands look better than ever!

Book of the Month

As we move about our busy lives each day, week, month and year we can tend to forget about those who are serving our country.  This month one of the books I read really jolted me back to the reality our military men and women face who are on the front lines.  The book “RED PLATOON: A True Story of American Valor”  by Medal of Honor recipient Clinton Romesha was a harrowing description of the Battle of Keating, the most isolated and inaccessible outpost in Afghanistan.  This battle gives vivid details of the battle between less than 60 Black Knight Troops vs over 350 Taliban insurgents.  The accounts of bravery, leadership, decision making, friendship and loss are presented in such compelling details that it took me less than 3 days to read!
We continually hear about celebrities and famous folks who are role models, and they just might be, however once you have read this book I would wager to say your definition might change.

Book of the Month

Each January I like to start the year reading one of my favorite books “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.  I am sure you have either heard or read this book at some time in your life and for me it is one of the original sources for which ALL success books originated.  The essence of this book truly brings to life the reality of how humans can achieve greatness and success in whatever they truly desire.
If you have never read this book or it has been years since you have read it, I encourage you to acquire a copy.  Within the first chapter you will not only feel reinvigorated to accomplishing your goals, but most importantly reprogram how you might think about success and achievement.

Book of the Month

Book of the Month
This past month I had the chance to read a great autobiography from the legendary college basketball coach John Wooden “Wooden on Leadership”
Wooden holds the record for most NCAA basketball championships at 10 in 12 years.  That being said after reading this book it seems the most important thing to Wooden was the development of leaders both on and off the court rather than the championships.
Over his coaching tenure, he developed a pyramid of success that he utilized with all his teams. This pyramid can also be used in business and personal life.
Great book about a solid individual.  I am always seeking new books to read so if you have a favorite let me know!

Book of the Month

This past month a special book came across my desk, while it is a short read it is inspiring. “Make Your Bed Little Things That Can Change Your Life..and Maybe the World” written by Admiral William H McRaven (Retired). Admiral McRaven combines his personal experiences as a Navy Seal and US Naval Commander with pragmatic thoughts on how to improve yourself with just small changes. In fact this book was inspired by a commencement address he gave at the University of Texas in 2014. Click to see this commencement address. I think this is a great book, in particular for our kids to read as they are going into high-school. I am always seeking new books to read so if you have a favorite let me know!
